Tracking the field rainfall needed to prepare underpass control
Summary
Connects rainfall near the road with each institution’s own management criteria to flag when to review inspection or control. Final control decisions are made by checking water level, field conditions and institutional procedure together.
Concept illustration Cross-section concept illustration of rainwater at an underpass low point and roadside rain observation
The problem
A road underpass sits lower than its surroundings, so rainwater collects there all at once. Road managers need to prepare for control not after a flood sensor detects water, but from the moment rainfall starts crossing a threshold.
An average rainfall figure over a wide area cannot tell you about a heavy downpour concentrated over a specific underpass.
Users
- Road/underpass management department
Decides when to prepare for and carry out control.
- Traffic control
Adjusts detour guidance and signal operation.
- Field inspection staff
Receives requests to inspect drainage pumps and barrier facilities.
Workflow
- 01
Set thresholds
Rainfall-level thresholds are set per underpass based on past flooding cases and drainage capacity.
- 02
Field observation
Rainfall around the entrance and low point is checked at one-minute intervals.
- 03
Staged alert
Staff are alerted at preparation, control-review and control stages.
- 04
Control & guidance
Barrier facilities and detour guidance are operated per institutional procedure.
Expected benefits (qualitative)
- Control preparation possible before flood detection
- Alerts matched to each underpass’s own thresholds
- A record of the basis for control decisions
Assumptions
- Integration with water-level/flood sensors, CCTV and barrier facilities requires coordination with the institution’s systems.
- Control authority and procedure follow each institution’s own rules.
